maybe I dont know how to search but not for lack of trying...
I am trying to find a chart that tells you what size diameter rods you start with, when using dies to cut male threads on them, based on the die's threading info ie use rod diameter x for 4-40 die use rod diameter y for 6-32 die and so on I have some rod fabricated into a shape already, and I need to cut threads on the ends of it. The rod diameter is 3/16" (.1875), I am trying to find out if that rod is the starting diameter for a known thread size. Can I get away with 10-24 on that rod? thanks in advance

Some tap drill tables (such as this one) also list the major diameter as well as clearance hole sizes; for rod stock I'd select it to be within the range bounded by the major diameter and the close fit clearance diameter, but if it's slightly under the major diameter it should be OK.
According to that table, the major diameter for 10-24 threads is 0.1900in so the 0.1875in rod should work just fine.

sounds right to me. Just measured some threaded 10-24 screws and got ~.1875

I used a 10-24 die on the 3/16" rod (.1875) and it worked fine
![]() thanks guys
