I'm not supossed to stare at my UV CCFL, right? At least if I want to keep my eyes for long...

I just mounted htem and I can clearly see the bar through the side window. that's... bad, right?

I really don't think it will pose an issue so long as you don't have yer eyeball pressed up against the case window like a kid in front of a candy shop.

you could always fabricate a small shroud.

No, It's fine. The only thing that's bad for you is the brightness of them, and even that won't hurt the average person.
