Default Need electronics help for a case project. Help me!

I just got this brilliant idea. I have a beast of a laptop coming soon and I need a way to carry it around that will protect it, and carry the accessories. I have this old gun hardcase I was thinking of turning into a "mobile setup" of sorts for when I take the lappy to work for business stuff and to other peoples house and such.

I want to take the gun case and modify it to be secure as I can make it, but I want it to be something rather badass. Here is what I was thinking.

Very similar case:

Now the idea I have is to fit the case with one of two things. Either a RGB combination lock (http://hackaday.com/2008/06/12/how-t...r-lock-part-1/)|(http://hackaday.com/2008/06/20/how-t...r-lock-part-2/) Or the keypad from a payphone. (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thum...-pay-phone.jpg) What do you guys think? I am a little stuck on how I will use this to hold the case shut securely which is one of the biggest reasons I created this thread.

Shielded electro-magnetic lock?

Pics from project:

depending on how much space you need... i'd rather use a pelican case vs a cheap aluminum clad cardboard box...

say http://www.pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1495 for example...

http://www.safetyed.org/enforcerdigi...layoutput.aspx

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002KMNIJG

mount the solenoid on the lid or base... fab an L bracket with a hole in it so when the case is closed the hold and the solenoid mate... taper the solenoid so it can close without being energized...

connect control panel to a small 12vDC power pack... anything, a tiny SLA battery or a 8xAA pack... the keypad has very little draw...

the keypad even has a tamper switch... so you can even wire up a 160dB siren, gps/cdma/edge transmitter..., 1200LB door latch magnet mounted beneath your laptop...

stick a bulkhead mounted IEC connector on the bottom... mount your ac adapter under everything along with your 12vDC battery charger...

Bloody brilliant. I dont know if I can afford a new case, but I was planning on reinforcing this one a bit if I could. Maybe someone will have an idea for that. :/

It does indeed. I was thinking of paying someone here with the skill and materials to build a better case for me. Maybe I will send Syrillian a PM and see what he is up to.

So I decided to roll with the Enforcer keypad mentioned above. I may not use exactly the same one, but similar for sure. Now the real questions is how I am going to get it all to work together correctly. I am a little unclear on how I would use that solenoid to my wishes. Maybe you can give me a better idea of what you had in mind LiNERROR?

I am going to roll with the case I have now even though it is cheap. I figure I can always just rip the keypad and stuff out and put it into a better case when I get one.

I also want to throw a retractable cord for a surge protector in there. Have the plug in a recessed well on the outside of the case. I will have to look around for some parts for that. ;0

It is a shame I dont have much experience with this level of stuff. I found some materials, but I have no idea how I would make them work together.

Lol, that's a bit overkill for a laptop box isn't it? Unless you routinely drop it from 2 stories up, run it over with a cargo van, shoot it with a 12gauge shotgun, and submerge it.

OK so anyone with some know-how. I want to try this keypad. Will it work with the solenoid deal and if so, how?

http://cgi.ebay.com/16-4x4-Buttons-K...item1e58230861

Im shooting for a 4 digit code to access. Nothing fancy. Maybe programmable on the fly if I can pull it off. Help?
