Norton isn't a bad anti-virus, but wont get rid of everything on its own. A layered approach is best.

Well If the virus got on the CD after burning then there was an infection prior to burning. Personally if i where you i would download the following application along with using Norton.
AVG FREE Avast anti-virus spybot search and destroy Once you have downloaded these go into SAFEMODE in your Windows installation and start a Virs scan first of all. I would use AVG first as its better than Norton. Once you have found and removed any infection scan again to make sure and then you are done.

I've read about this on forums like AfterDawn, CDRInfo and CDFreaks but never really believed it. Seemed more like urban legend to me, or uninformed and hysteric nOObs seizing on extraneous details and creating outrageous conspiracy theories.
__________________But since I've got an opportunity to actually discuss the matter with a first-hand "victim", I'm very interested. How was the virus manifest ? Was it a file that was already burned on the CDRW ? Visible or Hidden ? How did Norton alert ? When you put the disk in, or when you tried to burn something. Please post as much details as possible. Also, what was the manufacturer ? Did you open a sealed package ? Where did you buy it ? Have you thought to run any unique text associated with the CDRW, and if so did you find anyone else that experienced the same problem ? Part of me is wondering if this might not be like one of those cyanide poison Tylenol cases, where someone poisoned the CDRW and then planted it to be sold. Is it possible you bought repackaged merchandise ? Maybe something that was returned and then resold ? Have you had a chance to guage the "failure rate" of the CDRW's ? Maybe it was a factory recall situation, where they sold factory rejects that had been mass-repackaged. I've also read that a lot of media companies buy there media from various sources and repackage them all with their label. This issue comes up when true CD/DVD burning "experts" start comparing media for quality. Maybe you could run that Nero information tool that comes in the Nero suite. (I forget what it is called...) (checks) Duh. "Nero InfoTool" Maybe that will shed some light. If you find anything of value, you might do the CD-burning community a service by posting your information on a forum that is more CD-burning focused like CDRInfo or CDFreaks. You might save some people a lot of trouble.

Dude, it wasn't a conspiracy. He had an old CD-RW at his house with files on hit that he had placed there at some point--one of them had a virus on it. Not a big deal.
And stop slamming Norton; I don't like it either, but it did detect the virus. Sure you can slam it individually if you really want, but anyone who is wise runs more than one anti-virus program and Norton paired with another is a formidable defense, as would be any pair of virus prevention utilities; any single one by itself is a vulnerability.

Norton is the worst AV prgram ever. They delibarately create virii in order to sell their product. Their software is harder to remove than the virii. Peter Norton is actually a practicing warlock, and if you unscramble the letters in the word "Symantec" , you come up with "evil idiot". Try it, and you'll see.

I had norton on my old dell and all it does is generate more viruses... Even if you "uninstall" norton you will have a bunch or crap traces in the registry shortcuts all types of stuff... That's why I'm never going to install norton on this built computer. Go with Ewido Srecurity Suite or something its freeware and still updates itself past the trial ![]()
