Question Good C++ Books?

Going to dip my toe into C++ and really eyeing the "Accelerated C++: A Practical Programming by Example" book as I wish to escape learning C (not having a need for it). But does anyone have other examples of books that would compliment that one - solidly C++ oriented? Even better, in regards to game coding?

Also, can't seem to find the bookshelf reference set that I saw offered, but I thought it went for about $128. Would anyone know the name of this C++ reference library?

Thanks!

Nope, which is why I'm seriously looking at that book in question to learn C++ not C (which too many authors believe must be learned, but is a waste of time to unlearn to use C++ effectively). I'm a stickler of learning proper coding first.

There's no problem grasping it, but need more a hands on learning style. Theory will put me to sleep by page 2.

Thanks! Just what I was looking for, including game programming.

BTW, are there other languages that tie into C++ that I need to be aware of with game programming (especially DX9)? Like to buy a couple of books at once and save on shipping. :x

Get any C++ book then get Code Refactoring and Design Patterns. If you want to learn proper coding...this is how you do it.

http://www.amazon.com/Design-Pattern...e=UTF8&s=books

http://www.amazon.com/Refactoring-Im...e=UTF8&s=books

OOP is insane to wrap your mind around. It's nothing like standard, linear, coding. Keep at it and, in 2 years or so, you will have a lucrative career.

Thank you, FrankenPC, for helping to point the way. It's a maze to just find the first couple of books to get started, so many paths!

if you want a beginners book to console c++ game programming the Beginning C++ Game Programming by Micheal Dawson. I have it and I learned alot from it. Then you want to get a book that is geared to OO design like the one Franken PC got you. Actually Im really starting to like that other book he suggested too. I might just buy that.
