Default PIC Programming

I'll be attending a PIC programming session this weekend put on by our local IEEE branch and I'm just wondering if anyone uses/has used them for stuff and what they do/did. I've done high level programming and 8088/8051 assembly, some VHDL in Quartus II, and alot of work with PSPICE and EagleCAD. I don't think it'll be technically difficult, I just have no clue what I'm getting into.

If I really like it, I'll buy one of our robot boards. The keeners punched out a BotBoard in EagleCAD and had them sent out to a PCB manufacturer. I'm excited!
