Default Any of you work in the software industry?

Well, this may be a bit OT, but I'd rather not throw it to the wolves down there in the OT area, as this is more programming specific. I am in an internship currently for a medium sized software development company. We do lots of advanced point solutions for people like GM, Chrysler, Bank of America, Nasa, etc. Most of my coworkers are older (I guess thats to be expected with the type of programming we do, i.e. paperless loan management and manufacturing communications) but none of them really seem to be "into" computers. They are all excellent programmers, fluent in many languages and certified in numerous 3rd party software, but no one really does anything besides programming when it comes to computers. After my first month here I started asking around to see if anyone built or OCed for fun, or gamed, or did anything on their own with computers, and it turned out to be an almost entire no. Even my IT dept uses old P4 computers for their home computers, and when I mentioned Overclocking they looked at me like I was speaking Russian.

The thing that supries me the most has occured over the last week or so. One of my coworker's computers recently died, and he was nearly clueless about what happened. He mentioned it to me so I finally dragged the details and symptoms he witnessed out of him and it ended up sounding like a bad PSU. He brought it into work and I tested it, and ordered a new one. Today I just brought it back to him completely installed and fixed and he's like "man, I'm glad you're here, I would've had to take it in otherwise." For some reason, I was under the impression computer people would actually enjoy computers, like I do. Guess I was wrong.

Anyone else see this in their line of work?

I work for an electronics company, and both in my area and the software area, seems like no one is into computers either. I find it very odd. I just completely confused one of the IT guys when telling him about how I ran Memtest on my work machine and got errors.

But yea, I find this odd as well.

I've been in IT for 14 years and you're not alone, the majority of the people I've worked with aren't into what's inside the computer and tweaking it. Maybe five percent care what's inside the computer and enjoy messing with it. Even the gamers that I've worked with, maybe 25 percent of them enjoy this type of stuff, the rest are happy so long as they have a good enough system to play their games.

I am a software developer. Many of my co-workers don't really do that much with computers outside of coding. Others are more fluent about business hardware (raid arrays and such) but know much less about video cards. Most of it depends on how much free time they have. Most developers don't have a lot of free time, and the time they do have is spent primarily with family.

Its kinda odd to me, the amount of people who claim to be `Techies` and dont know diddly about hardware!
Guy just started where I work, knows his way round alot of software, but knows hardly ANYTHING about hardware!

I worked for a company that designed and built thier own Token Ring networking infrastructure. I had 500 computers in the test lab to keep running 24/7!
The new guys (who started same time as me) doing the testing of the cards were university graduates and if anything went wrong, they came to me to fix it!!

i am also a developer and have seen the same thing in the work palce.

but you have to keep in mind, when you get older priorities will change to be more sided to family and so forth. So there will be a day that i am out of the computer loop, and still capable of doing my "programming job"....but may not be able to diagno the new light driven powered computer with Cryrix GX6k2D processors (Yes cyrix will rule the world again )

also hardware has evolved alot over the past 10-20 years, when alot of the current senior developers started out. Try talking about object oriented or multi threaded java programming to someone who has done linear based progamming in openroad and you see a "deer in the headlights" look. You can buy a home computer from walmart that can power out numbers faster then a system which filled an entire room 25 years ago.

Don't worry right now your the new young kid on the block who knows alot...there will be a new version of you in 10 years on here talking about same thing, only this time, you're the old guy

Heh, true enough, I guess I just had the wrong impression coming in. Right now my career path and my hobbies align, but down the road one of them will inevitably split. I'm thinking of moving to silicon valley after college to work for a big name software company out there, filled with nerds just like me

I guess I can understand though, some days after having a wrestling match with some code, I get home and don't even want to look at a computer screen. However most of the time I plop down in my computer chair and be thankful that I own a 22" monitor Hopefully I never fall off the technology wave enough to have the "deer in the headlights" look when the newest thing becomes mainstream, at least untill I retire.

It still kind of sucks though, I had to explain why a co-workers crappy HP could not use a SATA hard drive because it was too old even though "all the stores sell more SATA!" And when I won my free evga mobo I was at work... and basically had noone to share in my excitement.

well, time to light up some Oracle and get to work

my dad codes for xerox and only one of the people he has ever met likes messing with hardware, and overclocking. my dad doesn't really like hardware because he is afraid of it breaking because when he first started out he was really into hardware. but every time he messed with the hardware he would end up bending pins or something. lol i have to really push him if i want him to help me with anything hardware related.
