Default Help, Please: Advertising for a Site (for Free)

A friend and I have a site, a small proboards roleplaying forum, and we're trying to get more users.

I was wondering if anyone here has any useful suggestions on free advertising solutions that will help get some interest in this (currently) pathetically small site.

Anyone have any expertise in this area? If so, I humbly beseech you to share your wisdom. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
~Kienan.

Go on other forums / sites and indiscriminately advertise your site. Depending on the kind of roleplaying forum you have, you could go into games like WoW and other MMOs' and advertise your site.

You can even go around where you live and post fliers, every small bit helps!

Web ads seem like a bad way to raise awareness of a website, and any kind of free program will be even worse. Search engine optimization to get your site at the top of relevant google/yahoo etc searches is probably the best route
