Question Were to Start? Learn to Program?

Hey guys!

Well programming has always appealed to me, as I love computers and I am very mathematically minded. So anyways I have never really gotten into learning it, although I have worked with html for some websites I designed.

Now I have a couple months off from high school so I thought since I have nothing better to do, I should try it out for a while and see if it is for me.

So what language do you experts recommend that I start with, I want it to be powerful enough so that if I get into it I can design more advanced programs and eventually maybe some GUI programs.

Also once I have the language picked out, what is the best way to actually go about learning it on my own? Anyone know any guides/books to help me get my feet planted.

Thanks a lot I really appreciate it!

Thanks for the links! I am considering C# I read the guide here and it seems fairly simple, but I may give Java a shot. Thanks for the Input!

Python all the way. Easy to move over to C++ Java or pretty much anything else...
Good luck, it's a long journey learning to do it, but it is a fantastic skill.

Java, C++, even python all are good starter languages. I really think what's important is that you _understand_ what the language is doing for you.

This.

Learned first on C++ but didn't understand programming until I used Python.

It is a fantastic skill indeed....
And the things you can do...thanks to my programming skills I recently managed to use my cell phone as a remote control over Wi-Fi
Anyway, the greatest place is, IMHO, SCHOOL. Not saying books or online tutorials are useless, but it is difficult, very difficult if you're starting from scratch. If there's a concept you don't understand, can you ask the book your questions? Of course not...
