school courses on programming really suck, they're insanely dry and are very very slow and erratic(teachers are usually all over the place and introduce stuff from 7 chapters on which is annoying). i'd say with any programming language you should try to find a tutorial online and avoid text books as they are also overly technical and dry.

You seriously think that online tutorials are the best way to learn programming, and that formal education and edited books are inherently worse?

I remember seeing the all mighty Hello World tuto, like 9 years ago but never got my interest... I'd have rather loved to write something more complex that says "**** the world" when you press an OK button. There was no tuto like that at the time

I took a semester of c# and it was enjoyable...sadly the first few semesters wont yield nearly as much as you'd think. I SAY DO IT!

Heres a good start...not sure if they have C but it'll give you insight into other languages that you'll inevitably learn anyways.

Sort of. I've taken programming fundamentals 1(javascript) programming fundamentals 2(visual basic) and advanced programming which was c++ and honestly can't say I enjoyed the instructors or books at all. Didn't make anything less than a B in all of the courses so its not like I didn't understand it.

I find my school classes quite enjoyable; I'm taking AP Computer Science (Java based) right now. I had the teacher last year for Intro to Java, and Visual Basic 1, and he manages to take a lot of the boring out of learning what could easily be a boring class. I've got a legal copy of Camtasia around and I'm tempted to making some tutorials about learning Java or Visual Basic basics. Just want to get some positive feedback from people first about the idea.

People around here seem to appreciate tutorials, but IMHO unless your tutorial offers something over the other million "Intro to java" tutorials out there it seems like a waste of time

I had Visual Basic classes in high school a year but that's like 10-11 years ago i was 14 or 15 yrs old so I was pretty much just f'king around and downloading Snes emus to play Zelda and FF2 in class and throwing paper balls with straws

edit: but sometimes Tutos are cool... I remember when I discovered electro chemistry for the first time, I was amazed, and it was with a tuto but well written.

The writter had the interest to interest you, you know? not just throw his knowledge all over the table with inunderstandable gribberish
