Default Helping people in the programming section is a waste of time

People get their answer and leave. They never rep, say thank you, or anything. I've helped at least 10 or 12 people in here without one single reply back to me or any rep. I'd suggest people stop helping too.

While it would be nice to receive a thank-you or rep, you have to question your own motive. Do you help to rep-farm or to actually help the person? If the latter, helping is not a waste of time and the mission is accomplished.

yea; makes it sound like u just want enough rep to go on a selling spree
i've seen it on other forums as well.. people do it just to make money, and don't understand that it is a privilege to the members and not a right
is that why you are raging?

I don't think it's about rep-farming. It's more about people being just plain rude and abusing people's help.

Somebody took some time to help with a complex topic (programming) and you don't even have the good graces to say "Hey, thanks." If you're too lazy for that, there's a rep button just so the person knows you read it and were thankful.

Forget the rep. If you helped somebody out, and they listened to your advice, then walked away without thanking you or anything, it'd be annoying. Now imagine if everybody you helped did that. You'd stop helping.

You have it right sir ^.

While a rep would be nice, I don't plan on going on a selling spree so it doesn't matter. In fact all I need is some acknowledgment that my post was either helpful or just plain sucked so I know for future reference. In fact I'm not even sure if they read my post. There was at least 5 topics in the PHP section where my post was the only one in the topic. Just look in the web programming section: it is full of topics where the OP never responded back. And yes this is me ranting/being angry.

The amount of people that dont rep is crushed by the multitude that do.

So go help some more.

Well, maybe you weren't actually helpful...? j/k!

I know what you mean. And I think that's life when you deal with all kinds of people. Another thing to keep in mind is that a lot of the people that post for help in the programming section are usually students working on an assignment for class--meaning that their classwork is the foremost thing on their mind and the only "important" thing in their life at the moment--you kinda get that way with blinders on for school. I don't think they intend on being rude and not recognizing the help, it's just that you get so preoccupied with something, you almost stop acting like yourself sometimes. I wouldn't take it to heart. It's just the way of life.

Half the time I just help for the fun of it or just to practice my own skills. I learn by helping others as well, but rep here and now would be nice. I agree with you overall I don't think that means we should stop.
