I used http://name.com to buy my domain. I think .com's are like $8.99/year which is pretty competitive. The extra bonus is private registration for free (people can't see your personal info on whois searches. Godaddy pissed me off because they charge you separate for this). It came with GoogleApps, so I just set up my website with Google.
When you buy the domain you just select "use google apps" (it's free) and you'll get a website, google docs, and best of all, GMail for your domain. Google Sites is pretty easy to use and you can do plenty of stuff with it. if you don't want to use Google with your .com I suggest either http://x10hosting.com/ (as noted earlier in this thread) or http://freehostia.com/ And if you want to go totally free, here are two free domain name services: http://www.co.cc/ you'll get: yoursite.co.cc & yoursite.cc.cc or http://www.dot.tk
