This is where the argument goes circular because while GPUs can crunch data the fastest, they also are capable of handling the least variety of calculations. PS3s are somewhat slower but more versatile, and CPUs are yet more slower and more versatile. So, speed or versatility?

I have a feeling that this is going to come down to a decision between PS3s, quads, or a mix of the two. Building a whole system just for a GPU to fold probably wouldn't pass the bang for the buck standard even though GPUs fly when folding. Remote management is going to be a major determining factor. Management of quads would be easy, and I have no idea about PS3s. The team that's going to study this and determine the direction of this project are going to be in for an interesting time.

I am willing to be a guinea pig to determine the possibility/ feasibility/ ease of getting four GPUs + SMP working together. I just need to uncover a lost truck full of 1900's.

I'm pretty sure that buying some quads and overclocking them would be the best bet. Then running them all in a 64-bit linux. I know this has already been said like 20 times but I'm just throwing in my vote.

nVidia GPU2 client right now is where you want to be. But we'll have to see what the new ATI drivers have to offer and how much Stanford will increase their PPD. Right now a HD4850 does around 1400PPD compared to an 8800GTS does around 4700PPD.

I know that you can't run the GPU2 client in SLI. So perhaps single 8800GT's in two rigs would be best unless you can work 2 intances of the GPU2 client for each card but I can't confirm this myself.
