Exclamation HELP!!! I am confused with my audio headers!!

So, I have been trying to build the rig in my sig, but am having issues. My first try I installed all my components and connectors and booted 'er up. Everything went smoothly for the next couple of hours and the night. No issues. In the morning i went to play with my new toy and plugged in headphones to the front panel of my Antec 900. Boom. no sound and I got an error in Vista saying I had a problem with my "High definition audio controller." I call ASUS (P5E x38 board) and they tell me to RMA it. I thought it was fluke. But no.

Yesterday the brand spanking new RMA board came. Same thing, built the rig, everything working. I TENTATIVELY put a set of headphones in and everything was good. Then, when I insert my mic into the front of the 900, Boom. Everything dies. I tried removing power and everyhing and clearing the CMOS. The board power LED stays lit, but nothing turns on.

Is it possible that I have a short in the audio header that is frying my boards? I am getting a third RMA from ASUS, but at this point i just plan on NOT connecting the front panel audio headers. Ideas guys or have any of you encountered an issue such as this?

Thanks

it is possible, but also check to make sure you are using the HD Audio header, and not the AC'97 header for audio.

i blew a 780i by connecting the front panel audio, i have since not touched the front panel and went and got a sound card as well, i would say to save you're third mobo dont connect the front panel.

the A900 has two connectors .. on my old mobo (asus p5w dh deluxe) i conected the ac97 and it was fine, done the same on the 780i and boom ... dead board

Yeah, I wa sure to connect the HDA connector version of the A900 header. I'm pretty sure the P5E is HDA, because the pins on the header say ADH and 90% of newer boards use the HDA codec. It never actually specifies what the connector type is, so i dunno. I guess I just wont use it.

Its so annoying as everything was humming along perfectly and boom, it dies on me. twice.
