The smell probably wouldn't have been bad at all. The heat inside the case would have quickly dried out the carcass, turning the poor fella into MOUSE JERKY, then he would have very slowly decomposed and not smelled much at all. The owner probably thought he smelled something cooking, and may have actually gotten hungry at some point.
