Most likely could have caused a short by touching another component in there. The cable looks horrible

is that a molex to 3/4 pin connector cable? if so, then no unless it fell inside the psu's fan.

it is a 2 pin molex

If it dead shorted, I guarantee you that's what blew it. Did you trip a breaker in the process? If you did not then the PSU took the full brunt of the hit. TOASTY.
