Default How To: Clean your Keyboard Literally*Logitech G15*

Since this is my first FAQ i'll start of the usual way, "Thanks to Overclock.net for existing and everyone here for helping me with every issue I have had, time for me to give "

Well this FAQ is for a G15 Gaming keyboard from Logitech, but i'm sure it can be used for any other keyboard, the concept is the same. (On a scale of 1-10 on the projects difficulty i'll give it a *7*)http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/pr...ONTENTID=10717

I've used it for about over a year now, and Spilled milk, soda and so forth on, lots of cookie crumbs and just dust in there. Decided to actually clean it, when I say clean, I mean literally clean it...

Things we will need:
Keyboard
Phillips drive
Dishwasher
Soap
Compressed air
Paper Towels

First of we need the keyboard

Start by shacking it well to get rid of the big chuncks and peices that are in between the keys, then start unscrewing the back panel (about 15-20 screws)

Take of the rubberish frame, its tricky since it has clips all around but make sure you unscrewed it.

The LCD part: be extremley careful since it has the LCD wire hooked up there, its really thin and is hard to put back in so look how its done first. It has a little black clip to keep it in place that will pop out, When its poped out the wire will come out very freely. I'll explain more below.

First unplug the keys themselves. Then start unscrewing the keys themeslves thers like 20 screws all around small ones, make sure you dont loose any becouse they are tiny.

When your done with that it should come out freely, this is the backside of it:

There are 4 peices that you unscrew,
1. The plastic peice that hold everything together and projects the LED lights.
2. The elastic thing that detects every key being pressed.
3. No idea what its called but its the rubber springs or whatever you want to call them.
4. And obviously the keys.

Now take the LED lights off and put everything aside. Now the black frame has the LCD screwed on, so make sure to take it off, since the frame is one of the peices you will be washing.
No we are ready to start washing, I used some compressed air to clean everything one more time just so my Dishwasher wouldn't get clogged up with this "Debris"

This is what we are going to wash, make sure there are no electronics or anything, becouse im sure it will destroy it, or you'll have to dry it for a week.

I put the rubber spring thinger on the hooks so it doesnt "Float" away during the wash seemed to work great!

*Washing*
----------------------------
Now for the washing part...

Make sure that you set the dishwasher so that the air dry is set to "OFF" or you will melt half of your keyboard. Set the water to warm, or easy hot whatever is not the Hottest.

Now while its washing go back and wipe the rest of the keyboard, blow some things away and wait for it to finish washing.

When its done take it all out and shake off the water, there will be a lot so I suggest doing that outside. Let it dry inside our outside doesnt matter whichever seems to work for you works for me. The keys will dry for a while, so use some compressed air to get rid of the water which works great! I let it dry overnight.

When its all dry and clean looking you can start putting it back together, but remember the way you took it off put it all back exactly the same! Otherwise you'll forget some bits and peices here and there.

When you are putting everything back together, be carefull with the LCD screen, pluging it back is a pain! took me a while to figure it out, the clip that keeps the plug in place is so tiny, I lost it at first but then it was found and all was good. just dont hurry and take your time. Make sure to put the wire in first, and put the black pllug that holds it into place back. It takes a while but it's done slowly. I used a Flat-head Screwdriver to hold the Thin wire while I stuck the Black plug in with my hands. Worked for me!
(That little orange wire)

When all is done, it should look like this, mine looks sexy! and all brand new! SELLING TO HIGHEST BIDDER! BRAND NEW G15 KEYBOARD! (JK )

It works great! looks great! And wasn't all that hard, just time consuming.

Some final shots

Thanks for looking guys, hope it helps and some of you try it,

maximum pc just cleaned a keyboard in the mar 07 issue by putting it in the dishwasher and taking it out before the rinse cycle. but I wouldn't recomend doing if you have a little lcd screen on there though. make sure its dry completely before plugging it in. They said let it dry for atleast 2 days.

Indeed... that technique is for basic PS/2 keyboards only. Even then the unit should sit key-side-down for several days (unless you live in a desert-like environment).

That was a funny little article.
