So my friend is having trouble with his printer, and claims it has a virus. It is a color inkjet, and is only printing blue, no other colors. It sounds to me like he is running out of ink, but he says he replaced the ink not too long ago.
__________________He uninstalled and reinstalled the printer from his computer, and now it is printing only green. I have not had a chance to take a look at it in person yet, but I figured it was very unlikely that it was a virus...sounds like an ink issue. Amirite? ![]() Just out of curiosity, is it possible to write a virus that would do something like that? If so, it would have to be written specifically for that printer software, since different printers have different drivers???? IDK.

Tell him to calibrate it and run the "Clean printer heads" application using the software that came with the printer. If it didn't come with software like that, it's a piece of crap and he might as well throw it out.
And no, I don't think it's possible to make a virus that affects a printer.

Maybe... I don't know... just a shot in the dark... but is the printer broken?

you don't really see viruses being destructive anymore. malware these days takes the form of adware, spyware, trojans, botnets, or other such things that are designed to make money in some way.

A virus can't get on the printer...possible there could be one on the computer, but a re-install would most likely take care of it unless it is a real in depth virus...and no cracker would make some thing like that for a printer.
sounds like the mentioned clean the jets could also be: cheap ink from eBay ink not installed right broken printer wrong drivers installed an evil spirit in the print spooler...
