This is a guide that I found about 6 months ago and thought that some of the OCN community could use it.
Microsoft Windows default USB sample rate (125Hz, 8ms response time) is surely not enough for today’s end-users. There are too many 1000Hz (1ms) patches out there, but most of them aren't supporting Windows Vista due to the new security features, especially in Vista x64. However, I found a way to do it, but I’m not taking any responsibilities for any damage, so use it at your own risk! If you’re still interested - just follow these instructions: 1. If you have Windows Vista x64, then you have to uninstall (Control panel > Programs and features > View installed update) the following Windows updates: * Update for Windows Vista (KB938979) * Update for Windows Vista (KB932596) 2. Disable Vista Integrity Check (Start Menu > Run > bcdedit -set load options DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS) 3. Reboot and log into Safe mode with Networking 4. Take ownership and give yourself full control to the file usbport.sys inside Windows\System32\Drivers. 5. Rename usbport.sys to usbport.old 6. Now download this file and extract the correct usbport.sys to Windows\System32\Drivers and reboot. That should do the trick. Remember! Use it at your own risk! Don't blame me if your motherboard explodes/Vista or USB fails. Anyway, I’ve already tested it on both Windows Vista x86 and x64 with great success. If you're having issues after applying the patched file, just log into safe mode, delete the patched usbport.sys and rename usbport.old to usbport.sys. Windows Vista x64's users can now use this tool instead of uninstalling the security updates in the 1st step. If deemed worthy can a MOD add this to the FAQs under my name?

It makes your mouse respond to movement faster. This is not sensitivity, but response.

So what odes it matters if you have a 8ms mouse latency? only reason I'd go for 1ms is if I took out my 2xSamsung 19' CRT that runs 100Hz at 1280x960 to play with since they don't have any ms latency like a TFT does.
Though getting above the ms of the monitor isn't always fun when that little extra does matters. but there is a 500Hz setting for most of them if they support 1kHz (only for those that have 5ms like me), those with 2ms monitors have to get 1kHz to get 1ms below the ms of the monitor.

Well the whole point is to provide a useful FAQ for those of us that can take advantage of this little trick. Personally I didn't notice a difference untill a few weeks later when I formated and forgot it was ever tweaked. My curser in games was just different, and I could figure it out, then I realized it was just a little bit slower in the response. I was able to move my mouse maybe a 16th of an inch before the cross hair moved. I know that isn't much at all, but most people never think about it. Most think that when they move there hand the arrow moves at the same time, not taking into account the response time. In actuality the hand moves a slight distance before the PC notices the movement, this tweak speeds up that response time ust enough to take notice of it.

For the longest time I was trying to figure out how to get it done in Vista. When I seen that it can be done I was so happy. I did the tweak and loaded up BF to see if it worked and sure enough.
