The new dells are even worse than the Apple boards.
Its hard to describe to someone how nice it is to type or play on a mechanical board.
You do need to try them for yourself to really appreciate the difference.
And $70 is nothing
My realforce just cost me far too much. So did the Happy Hacker!
Still as I use them a lot I feel its worth it.
You dont need a Aston Martin to get to the shops but its a lot more fun if you have one

No. My question is whether PS/2 keyboards with programmable macro buttons exist.

See, I don't understand the mechanical craze over keyboards. I LOVE laptop-feeling keyboards, hence the reason I've bought several of Microsoft's Comfort Curve 2000's. Best keyboard I've ever had the pleasure to type on. And I HAVE tried true mechanical keyboards. I just don't like 'em. You have to press the keys down far too far to acuate (sp?), and it slows me down considerably.

You prefer the scissor-switch? That's fine. Although, those kinds of keyboards tend to be more fragile. ( That makes me wonder if there's a hybrid mechanical-scissor switch)

Mechanical keyboards (especially the Model M's ) are tanks. You'd hurt yourself before trying to break one.

Honestly, I like both scissor-switch and mechanical keyboards. Its getting to the point where I'm really hating the traditional membrane keyboards...
I'm about as fond of my Apple Aluminum as my 1984 Model M.

Yeah... see I don't care so much about reliability. Keyboards are cheap, at least the ones I buy, and they usually get dirty and have worn-out keys before anything fails on them, so I'd want to replace them anyway before they break. $12 for a Comfort Curve 2000.

Also, for gaming, I highly suggest going with PS/2, not USB. USB specs only allow for 6 simultaneous key presses plus 4 modifiers (like Ctrl and Alt). PS/2 is unlimited.
When you're typing it won't matter, but some gamers might be able to reach that limit.

You know, I absolutely love the feel of a good scissor switch keyboard as well. I can type faster overall on them, but I end up being pretty inaccurate because I always manage to hit two keys at once here and there because they are wider than normal (it should be the opposite right? lol. but I just keep slipping up on them). And I've tried 3 different ones and they always end up pretty stiff after a month or so because I wear them out so quickly.

By the way, I don't know which keyboards you've tried, but if you try a Buckling Spring one you might like it - you don't have to press the keys all the way down to actuate them, and you'll feel it when they do soon as the spring buckles.

My model M gave me arthritis when I first bought Half-Life 2. That thing would make a decent weapon though, jeebus it's heavy.

I've been looking into getting a mechanical keyboard for work. For the sake of others around me, it can't be clicky...hows this one?
Its the ABS M1
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...1&Tpk=ABS%20M1
I was also semi-considering this one (Filco FKB104M/EB):
