Exclamation Why I think the MX518 is not good enough

I see this mouse recommended so many times that it amazes me and I want to get some clarity on this, both for myself and for others.
We both like to defend our purchases and root for a specific manufacturer sometimes, but really, I'm not here to flame. That's why I'll back up my claims with arguments.

I'll get straight to the two major points, which I think make the mouse less than good for gaming. I've used it for a week (I know it's not enough to fully test it, but enough to notice some things) and here's what I've found:

1. The cable is too thick and not flexible enough. When it hits some objects on the table you can feel it and it's annoying. Most newer gaming mice have braided cords, which are thick but flexible and not so heavy. Some others have a very thin cable (A4Tech, the original Deathadder), which is very flexible and you can't even feel it (especially the A4Tech).

2. The mouse wheel (the main issue):

A) It's loud. Nothing else to add here, it's almost like a standard for Logitech mice. Some might not really care, but I think we can agree that it's not a good/desired feature.

B) It doesn't have a good grip. It has the same shape as casual "office" mice, it's thin, rounded on top and no dents. Definitely a bad point here as well.

C) It's not precise. How exactly? Scrolling the mouse wheel down would sometime make the mouse "bounce back" up one notch by itself. Vice versa for scrolling up (at the end of scrolling, it would jump down). You could often see this happen while browsing, for example: you scroll to the bottom of the page and then it would bounce back up one notch by itself. In game, where the wheel is often used for switching, it would cause you to select a weapon, only to then -by itself- switch to another weapon. VERY annoying.
I thought that maybe it's just the _two_ brand new 518s that I've tried. But I found some other people on the internet with the same problem:
link1
link2
I'm guessing it's more people who just live with it and don't care. Or because, for example, they have the mouse wheel binded to bunnyhopping and they don't need the precision...
I've used another Logitech ("office") mouse and it has the same type of wheel with the same issues, so I'm guessing this is a common occurence. Maybe I'm just out of luck with Logitech mice, I guess it's possible.

To be fair, there are some good things about this mouse. Mainly its build quality, it seems very durable and well built. Also the tracking is good, although the polling rate of 500Hz (I think that's the max for this mouse, correct me if I'm wrong) is not up to the standards for the "best" mouse nowadays, but that's already nitpicking.

Bottom line: Of course it depends on how one uses the mouse, so those issues might not be relevant to everybody. But in general I don't see how this mouse can be recommended so recklessly, since it obviously has some potentially serious issues for an average user/gamer.
I'd say the main reason is that people simply haven't tried enough alternatives to see how much better it could be in certain aspects. Because if someone is using this mouse for 3 years and it _works_ for him, what will he recommend? Of course he won't recommend any of the _many_ mice that came out in the mean time, simply because he didn't try them, or he just tried a few of them (perhaps some of the worst examples).
And then it's also a matter of "everybody says it's good, so it has to be good". My recommendation is simply to try it, compare it to others, be critical. You can always return a mouse and get the money back (at least for online orders I think this is the standard).

I don't have a problem with the cable. I have a end pinched under my monitor, and about 3 inches of slack on the 8 inches of wire that's left. Works like a charm, I never get any wire drag.

I don't mind the noise it makes since I use headphones, so I never hear it.

I have giant hands, and I can grip it perfectly. It's a mouse made for people with larger hands, so.

It doesn't bounce for me. I have a ASUS rebrand of this mouse though (came with my moms computer).

My personal 5 year experience with the mouse > all other opinions. I have had this mouse and it still performs like the day i got it. The scroll will is NOT loud, in fact it is the quietest one on a mouse I have used. I wouldn't trade it for any other mouse of than a CM sentinel which doesn't have prediction. The shape fits my hand perfectly and I cant stand to use any other mouse for gaming.

I agree, the wheel on the mx518, and the g5 even, is subpar. Only flaw imo though. Cord doesn't bother me.

I have a g9 now. Much improved mouse wheel.

I have the G5 mouse which is very similar and love it. I have tried other mice and have not been impressed, but this mouse is great. I can't comment on the MX518 directly since I have never owned one.

I second the notion of the G9 being an awesome mouse. I just got one, newegg had the g9 for much cheaper than a G9x and I don't need that much DPI, and I have to say how amazing this mouse is. I use the wide load grip and it fits my palm perfectly, allowing me to use the claw method.

It took me a while to determine what grip I use, but when I noticed that I claw, I went ahead with the G9 and it so far has been the only mouse that fits my style perfectly.

Don't have any of the problems you list, except for the clicking when you scroll, which I like (ESPECIALLY for swapping guns in a FPS) since it gives a TACTILE response. I can tell by feel and sound just how many clicks I've done. If I know my skill/gun/whatever is three down, I know exactly how far to go without having to check and make sure.

Very comfortable mouse for me, cord doesn't seem to be an issue.

Everybody's got their preferences.

You are so right... I was dissapointed when i bought mine, but i took it and still defended it. Really, you've just allowed me to realize what i knew all along, it is actually a pretty bad mouse. And it wobbles on any of my steelpads, which is the most annoying thing in the world.

This i do like though, it fits my hands perfectly. One of the few mice that do.

Edit: And yes, the wheel is terribly inaccurate, noisy, and just all out obnoxious. Instead of one of those nice ones that don't have the different "Click" type things when you scroll, the smooth ones that i love soo much.

The wire has killed me more times then i can count in FPS games...

THIS. IS. ****ING. PRICELESS.

I think that's the reason why it's so "loud".
