Default Laser or Jet?

sorry if this is in the wrong section or forum..

im been wanting a laser printer since the old printer i have now drys up every other day..

but their really expensive and the toner is as much as the printer...
(not the mention the power usage O.o)

im wondering if a ink jet printer will dry up as fast as a regular printer?
we dont print that much but when we do we really need it to print.

any suggestions? or even what printer is good? below $200.

thanks a lot guys.

color or black and white?

if you don't need color, go laser... no doubt at all...

laser printers use a shelf stable toner that really just a charged plastic powder... i've had toner cartridges that are YEARS old and still work perfectly.

IF you need color and don't mind spending the money, go color laser...

a much more affordable option would be inkjets, and they come in a few different flavors... dye based, pigment based, integrated print head, replaceable print head, cartridge based print head...

if you're going to go inkjet i'd strongly advise a non-bottom of the barrel Canon... (ie not mp240 or mp480) the cheapest models use a cartridge based print head/tank that inflates their ink prices 10 fold... they use a dye based ink like HP so your prints aren't water proof... but... you don't have the clogging issues like epsons normally have without normal use...

Plus you can get "generic" ink tanks for next to nothing... i have picked up ink tanks for my iP series for 2-4 dollars a color...

so you're looking at rather cheap per sheet costs with a 60-80 dollar printer that costs $25 to replace all the ink...

Laser printers normally can't get anywhere near this per sheet cost until you get into larger units which have a high up front cost... which may not be worth it for occasional use.

Here's a few deals:
Color Inkjet bundle with extra Black tank - $90 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.283428
Color Inkjet/MFC scanner/fax/copier with card reader and is also wireless... (****) $160 with free shipping - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16828102357

Monochrome Laser - $185 a litte more than the hl2170@$140 but toner capacity blows it away... always get High-Yield toners, cost a little more but normally last 3 times as long... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16828113427

color laser you're looking at ~$200 for 4 toners... until you get into units over $400

All depends on what you want: Color or Black & White? Budget? How much will you print; 100 sheets a year? month? day?

Almost all printers (consumer class printers that is) are thermal inkjet now. Now if you are looking for just a monochome printer then i say get a nice brother 2140 or hp 1006. both can regularly be found well under 200 ( think msrp on the brother is about 129 and the hp is 179) I think the brother 2140 is the superior printer in this case. If you want a decent inkjet for everyday printing i suggest an hp 6500 series printer those should be in your price range ink isnt terribly expenisve and from experience the jets clogging is very seldom. If you can stretch your budget to around 300 then the HP Officejet 8500 pro is a damn nice printer ink looks expensive but cost per page beats quite a few laserjets that are in the same price range. If you are looking to Do quite a bit of color printing but not photos then again the hp 6500/8500. I do like canons image quality on picture prints but the ink is a bit more expensive per page than the 6500 and a heck of a lot more expensive than the 8500. And then i would reccomend an MP860/870 cannon
