XP doesn't natively support DVD drives. To use a dvd you'll need software. It'll always show up as CD-rom in XP

I had absolutely no problems with my DVD-RW and DVD-ROM drives in 32-bit XP Service Pack 2. I didn't need special software. I didn't need special drivers either.

It still shows up as a Cd-rom drive. To burn dvds you need special software (ImgBurn, Nero, etc). For watching Windows Media Player works.

Did it actually show up under My Computer as a DVD Drive? Because I've ALWAYS had to install some sort of DVD Software for XP to realize that I've got a DVD Drive. Otherwise, it just says CD-ROM or CDRW until I put in a DVD disc, then it says DVD-ROM.

I'm going to reboot into XP right now, but before I do, I wish to admit that I think I do remember seeing it say "CD-ROM". But I didn't care. The reason I didn't care is because they still worked properly as DVD drives.

Just try putting in a DVD, and try burning a DVD-RW. If both of those are good then you're fine.
