I want to get my bro an uninterruptible power supply for Christmas. He only has a 15.6" Compaq low end dual-core laptop (he does not have a desktop). What model UPS around $100 or less would you guys recommend.

APC are known for high quality ups, I use cyberpowers. My sig rig is on a 810w tower type. That model runs around 120-150, you can look at them here I like them, comes with software that interfaces with the box so you can see when power outages occured, provides settings that will shut down ur pc during an outage, etc. Although I do beleive APC has similar software to.
Wattage is what to keep in mind. If you look at my sig, the one with xfire 1950s, when I'm full load cpu/gpu it pulled about 380w. With the 810w ups, my rig could idle 11 minutes on battery power, i think it pulls around 230 idle. So his system would pull considerably less, even like a 500w would probably power him for 30+ min, I would think.

Hey, I would recommend going with an APC Smart UPS 700 or something similar. They're less than $100.00 and they're better than the new cheap UPSs. In case anyone wonders, the Smart UPS 700 outputs a sine wave, filters power, offers avr/boost and drop, and has surge protection. Some of the cheaper new UPSs may offer similar wattage, but definitely don't come close to the level of protection. Also, if you look around locally you might even find an even better deal on this particular unit. A lot of companies upgrade and need to get rid of theirs, usually doing so fairly cheap. You could probably get it for less than $100 and pick it up locally. Would love to answer any questions about the Smart UPS 700 anyone has. T |

I've got one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16842117005
Never had an issue with it, keeps my sig rig going with no complaint.

Why would you need a UPS for a laptop?

Please forgive my questioning, but why would you need a UPS if a laptop already has a battery? The only way this would be worth it would be if your power goes out for longer than the laptop's battery life frequently or you get a lot of power surges. Plus you have to put up with the incessant beeping...
By the way, I have an old APC SmartUPS 600 (from back when APC stuff was beige) that I bought at Penn State's salvage store for $5 and put $60 worth of batteries into... I don't recommend you drive all the way over here just to get a good deal on a used UPS, though. Those batteries are extremely expensive.
