I got water all over my MX518 that i had so i had to get a new mouse. Got the G5 because i figured it would be better. No noticible performance differance. I still keep it on roughly 1200-1600 DPI. I mean, who really uses 2000 DPI. I can see if you were doing photoshop alot, but if you were doing photoshop that much, buy a digipen and pad. Also. I HAD to buy a mousepad for my G5. My MX518 would work directly on my desk which has simulated woodgrain. The G5 wouldn;t. And it is the first mousepad i have ever owned. But it is a fragpad, so i guess i will let it slide. If my G5 craps out on me, it's safe to say i will get the mx 518.

The difference between optical and laser.
Laser=higher dpi, doesnt work when you lift it at all off the mousepad, does not work with certain mouse pads (its said that to get the best perf of a laser you have to use a white sheet of paper)
Uhm, I have a laser and I can lift 2-3 inches off the surface and it still moves as if it was touching the surface. I don't use mouse pads though, I hate them. Ever since optical and lasers came along, all mousepads that I have tried have decreased performance.

By the way, I use 2000 DPI . The first few days I got my mouse, I played Warcraft III: Frozen Throne and some Doom III, so I could really get used to lots of movement with it. After about 3 days, I really got used to 2000 DPI, and now I love it. I think it's the best for gaming; but once again, only after you have gotten extremely used to it. I hate using mouses that aren't 2000 DPI. Just thought I'd tell you guys my life story of 2000 DPI mouses.

actually, i wouldn't. once you see how handy on-the-fly sensitivity controls are, you don't go back. in BF2, you hop in a tank, push a button and you can swing that turret around real quick, which makes mopping up infantry a lot easier. hop out, push a button, and you're good to go for infantry again.

same with counter strike. some people like a lower sensitivity when they AWP, so just push a button and it slows down. switch guns? push a button and up it goes again.

Honestly I really don't think that beside the way it feels in your hand there is any real world difference. Who uses 200DPI in a game anyway... I know 1600 is crazy fast. I set the 518 to 1600 and my mouse moves across the screen using 1/2 inch of mouse pad lol.

Kudos on the G5. I was a terrible CS player until I got one, which actually allowed me to aim.

the g5 has a crappy mouse wheel. The toggle feature on it is useless and the wheel is poorly positioned and does not turn well.

I like my mx518. My son likes his and my daughter loves hers.
They are a great mouse but not this great.
