Default How can I prevent the power from going out when fiance uses a hair dryer

Title pretty much says it all. I can run the microwave, the fridge, whatever else in the apartment but when she goes and uses the hair dryer, the entire apartment goes out. It's an older building and luckily I have those fuses in my box which just pop up and need to be pushed in to reset but I was wondering if theres any way to prevent the dryer from doing this.

see if you can replace the fuse that controls the plug she plugs in to with a higher amp one...it's probably a 10amp fuse in there, if you can replace it with a 15amp that will give you 1800watts on that outlet, instead of the 1200, which is too little for a hair dryer

Well the fuse(is that the right word?) can just be replaced with a 15++amp.

First off, it's a circuit breaker. Secondly, it may not be as easy as switching it out for a higher amp one. If you do, it may cause issues with the wiring, which may not be able to handle the higher amperage. You may have to ask an electrician to check things out to see what's possible and safe.

Those are circuit breakers? When fuses blow, you need to remove them physically and replace. Having a breaker upgraded to a higher amperage is something that should be left to a qualified electrician.

Why?
It's really just a cheap and quick switch.... It's not like he's going to be running the hair dryer constantly?

Anybody suggesting upping the amperage rating on the fuse or breaker, whatever it may be, is a bad idea.

1. Try a smaller wattage hairdryer.
2. Consult the apartment maintenance people if possible.
3. Consult an electrician.

You don't just change breaker values to what ever you feel like, especially when you don't know why it was originally at that value, or what else is on that line.
