My desk has a nice large tray, so I'm able to fit my G15, my n52te, and my mouse along it. Keeps my desktop free for munchies, drinks, remotes, and other junk...heh Plus the try is at a better level with my arms.

Kinda depends for me.

Factors:
Height
Keyboard Style
Frame Edging (sharp or hard angle edges suck)

most of the time I use my keys on top of the desk.

Can't stand desks with keyboard trays. I've gotta be able to stretch my arms out.

Desk. Granted I am a bit taller than most so keyboard trays are usually to low to be comfortable. I personally rip them out of the desk i buy so i have room for my legs...

Because of my old computer chair, I had to put the keyboard in the tray (height issue). Now that I have a chair with adjustable height, I put the keyboard on the top of the desk, and I hope I never have to go back!

I say both. Both have pros and cons.

For example, Keyboard tray I can put drinks, snacks, etc. on top without worrying if I'm going to hit it or not. Also protect dust from going in.

Top of desk: Easy access, If you dont need all the space its a good idea. etc
