Well, I didn't really know where to post this.. I guess here will do!
__________________So, as it's been for the last year, I've always wanted power power power! Now that I have a beast machine I don't really want... power... I want a budget machine that run's well. I've noticed that the more money you pump into a PC the less it's price/performance ratio is. I mean... I really don't notice a huge difference from my old E8400/GTX260 machine to my i7/4890X2 machine... and theres a HUGE price difference. So, going to university come next September, I'm starting to prepare. I have alot of things on my plate like buying my license (750$) and I'll need a laptop, and I can't be carrying my HAF 932 around with me everywhere I go, i'll destroy my back! So, I'm deciding to build a relatively powerful machine, but nothing overly crazy. So heres the deal, I've found a buyer for my PC... just the tower, for 2200$ which I know is a huge rip off for him but it's good for me! I probably dumped around 2500$ into my PC since I got it... (e8400, gtx260, i7, 4890's) So, I just went and priced some things and this is what I've come up with. I'll most likely be jumping into Graphic design and/or audio engineering, which will require a decent PC... and I think this will do! Gigabyte P55-UD3R Motherboard i5 750 2.66GHz Quad CPU G.skill 4GB 1600MHz RAM Case: No Idea, 100$ Pricepoint right now. (HAF 922 placeholder) ATi HD5850 1GB Videocard WD Cavier Black 640GB Corsair TX750W PSU This comes to a grand epic total of 999$, that leaves me 1200$ to spend. I'll most likely buy a capable laptop of running basic audio production programs and animation programs, no gaming capabilities will be needed seeing as I'll have my "main" pc to game, and I think it'll be very good! Besides, I don't think i'll have much time to do much at University anyway... I need to party :P My father said he'd split on my license, so 375$ will be subtracted but it won't really matter because I'll most likely have the money saved up anyway. I'm thinking maybe of buying a Timelime laptop... the 8 hours of battery life is highly appealing... but I don't know about the 1.3ghz dualcore, lol. Anyways, what do you guys think of my predicament and build? I think that will be very capable of gaming and work!

why don't you just downsize your case to something smaller and keep the i7? I wouldn't be able to live without mine, hah

I just did the same thing but I wiped out my entire desktop and bought a REALLY nice gaming laptop and I couldnt be happier. Eventually i'll buy a lower end desktop just to have one in case but I think getting the laptop has made me MUCH happier in the long run.

Well, my PC destroys crysis right now, but the idea is I can sell my Current PC for 2200$... and buy a PC that is around 70-80% of it's current performance, hell! in games like GTA4 and other games that don't really support Crossfire I'd get higher FPS due to the fact a 5850 is faster then a single 4890.

have you seen the preformace on the 5770? For the 160, they are very good cards. Take a look at 1 or 2 of those.

Try to get a laptop that is 12 to 14 inches. Big enough to see things without having too large a footprint and comes with a normal-sized laptop keyboard. 15 inches is too big imho, especially since you have a desktop already.

I'd invest in a 1600$ laptop if I didn't need the processing power of the i5/i7... I coooouuulld get that crazy i7 laptop but the 35minute battery life on a 12cell is kind of a turn off, haha.
__________________5770 is quite attractive, especially for multi monitors... Maybe I might invest in multiple monitors and get a 5770.

Note that right now there is not a big difference in FPS between a 4890 and a 5850. Only around an average of ~6FPS. Check out the link in my sigrig for my testing.

I feel the same way kind of with my i7 build, I mean I could of built something cheaper and threw in a 5870 or a nice 2nd monitor. But it was for the same price as my X3 build so it was like..why not?
