Default :::fan mod::: lowering the to\llerance

yeah for some reason my thread subject got all screwed up but anyway...

lowering the tolerance between the fan and its housing to reduce back flow = less noise due to decreasing the turbulence. this in theory would also help to increase the max pressure that the fan could make. i want to do the mod on my Big Typhoon but i haven't found the right material to do it. so far ive thought about using tape and epoxy which would need to be sanded and take lots of labor... has anyone tried this or have any ideas on how to do this?

So... you're trying to reduce fan noise? Fan silencers would be the first step.

ok one of the problems ive found with heat sinks and the noise coming from them is back flow due to a pressure build up between the fan and heat sink when using a high RPM/flow fan. the effect is similar to cross flow effect found on airplanes. adding wiglets to the end of the wings creates a barrier which helps to prevent a circular/spiraling flow off the back of the wing know as "cross flow" as shown in the picture. by lowering the tolerance the decreased space would in theory reduce a back flow pattern lowering noise, increasing flow as well as the max pressure the fan can produce

What component do you plan to mod exactly? The fan blades?

What angle and size do you plan to use? How will you ensure blade balancing? How will you be modelling the cross flow?

To answer most of your questions: (1) a fridge cannot cool a PC (2) 64-bit OS for over 3.4GB (3) If a PCIe card fits, it should work (4) Resolution, not screen size (5) If you have a question, it is not news (6) Report, not respond to Spam (7) Single-Rail/Non-Modular PSUs are not always better than Multi-Rail/Modular (8) Sequential does not matter as much as random for OS drives

im not changing the fan blades because as you stated, balancing would be very difficult. instead, I want to build up the shroud that encases the fan. its a stationary object that requires no balancing. as long as the blades move freely i should have nothing to worry about. even higher quality fans like the vantec tornado have about 3mm of space in the corners. What do you mean by "modeling the cross flow"?

what do you mean by "build up"? Basically make a duct?

there is a space between the outer most part of the fins and the wall around it.
In this image of a car radiator, you can see what looks like 3/4" or so spacing between the end of the blades and the shroud.

as a test I electrical tape on the inside of that wall on my 80mm tornado. it wasn't too hard to do and i was able to get it down to about .5mm without any scraping of the blades against the tape. as for the noise, i wont know until i try this on my 120mm thats on the BT.
