Default EVGA 680i SB Cooling!

I had a need for a southbridge cooler since I went LC on my NB, and they are attatched via heatpipe. I went into my garage and hunted for old aluminum heatsinks, something I could ghettorig to my board for temporary purposes...

I came across an old MX200 video card, AGP. I popped off the heatsink...and amazingly...it was an absolute PERFECT fit. The mounting holes in the video card heatsink matched perfectly with the holes on the motherboard, and no components interfered. I was amazed.

Now, after turning it on and going to bios I was hit with the hard truth of a small passive aluminum heatsink. 70C on the southbridge, and rising. I turned it off at 75 but I am sure it would have went higher. This would be a great little ghetto-solution if there was a lttle airflow over it though, it took about 10 minutes to get that high, and this was with Raid0 running so I am sure that brought the heat up a lot. I'd say a 40mm fan or something on top and those temps wouldn't go much higher than 40-50c which is prefectly safe for that chip (I was about 67 with the stock cooling solution) Unfortunatly I don't have anything smaller than 80 so I can't test that right now

I just thought it was pretty neat that the MX200 heatsink was such a perfect fit, thought I would share it with you guys.

great Job. I usually simply butcher the stock blocks till they serve some cooling function...

Yeah but the EVGA south block is just a hunk of copper with a pipe sticking out the side, so even it I chopped off the pipe it wouldn't be effective at all...I would just bend the pipe over and have it hang the other way (mount it backwards? hehe) but I'm far too lazy

Update...pointed my rad at it from the bottom of the case to get some airflow over it (tried putting the NB fan on it but my GTS it too chunky, wouldn't fit)....ifling at 53C now SB...which is amazing since theres barely any airflow.

On another note my CPU is idling at 22C with a 120.1

Just a tad bit off topic... sorry. But how do you find out the temp of your SB? (and NB) What kind of program are you using? I use Everest and it tells me just about anything and everything I need to know, but I can't find my NB & SB temps.
