i have a [cheap] heatsink and its not cooling as much as i'd like it to. the stock fan on it claims to push 41-ish cfm.. do u think sticking a nice LED thermaltake fan that claims to push 78.7cfm help alot? right now its my only solution besides lapping my heatsink (which i really dont feel like doing).. if u think it will help, how much should the temps drop?

Do you already own the fan?
If you have to go out and buy one its not worth it imo

.. i can really push my cpu to its limit but i really need that 5-10C before i can up my voltage.. i would have to buy the fan but i dont mind that.. this is just speculation so far, and hey i get to put extra LEDs in the case

I would get a freezer 7 pro or Big Typhoon or TRUE i'm sure they'll cool better than that rosewill one.
On the note of the fan, if you got one with a higher CFM yes it probably would lower temps, although lapping would help even more. Have you used AS5 or shin etsu?

I know on the big typhoon replacing the fan with a higher cfm model can have up to a 10*C effect. You will probably notice a difference...plus you'll have pretty led's. It won't hurt changing the fan anyway. What are your current ambients and idle/load temps.

my ambients usually always hang around 70F, my idles are around 29C and my load is 57C.. i wanna squeeze as much temperature out of this hsf as possible. at least 10C to increase my voltage from 1.285 to 1.41 (which, according to my calculations, should increase my temps about 10C, hence my wanting to get 10C cooler).. what are your thoughts?

I've just looked at your hsf, I think replacing the fan will definately reduce your temps. I can't estimate by how far though. Also a higher cfm fan will probably be significantly noisier, but if you don't mind noise its not a problem.
Do you have any rear fans mounted behind the heatsink?

these fans come with manual speed controls, so if it gets too noisy i can find a good temperature to noise ratio.. so no estimation whatsoever of how much of a temp drop i will get![]()

If you havnt already done so..lap it...get a piece of glass and some sand paper, start of with 200 grit and sand the base of the hsf until it is flat, then jump to 800 grit until the big scratches are gone, and then go to 1500 grit until its very smooth and flat..and your done.
