Default Unintentional experiment in passive VGA cooling

So, here I am stress testing my system (Prime95 large FFTs, S&M 1.9.1 memory test, and ATiTool's artifact scanner all running simultaneously) in an 85F room, with my exhaust fans on low (inside of case is past 105F) and everything has been going fine for about 3.5 hours.

Then I hear a clank, followed by some grinding. I look around to see what could have fallen or otherwise made the noise and I don't see anything. Worried, I pop open the side of my case and take a look. The 92mm fan I had glued to my S1 was laying on the bottom of my case straining to turn against a thumb screw, so I pull the power cable out and remove the fan. Everything is running fine, but the GPU temp is slowly creeping up, then finally levels off around 68C (was 54C with the fan, but I know it to be stable at the clocks in my sig up to 70-75C).

I shrug, close the case back up, turn the exhaust fans to medium, and go back to watching ATiTool. Temps begin dropping, and finally settle at 62C. Impressed, I decide to leave the fan off.

Apparently, in my efforts to make my card look as neat/clean as possible, I did not use enough hot glue to ensure that it stayed on the S1 at high temps. I never had any problems with using hot glue in the past, but I had always used fairly massive globs of it, that would hold even if it became a little soft. Oh well, lesson learned.

I now have a quieter, and ironically cooler (except for video card) system. The noise of moving to meduim speed on the tri-cool case fans was less than the noise of the high-rpm ball bearing fan on the video card.

20% GPU OC on a passively cooled 8800GTS 512 isn't so bad.

Hehe, good thing nothing broke when you lost your fan. I've broken so many fans and its not fun having fanblade shrapnel flying around your case.

I actually forgot to put the fan on my 2900xt HR-03 once when it was OCd and even overvolted.

After a bit of gaming, there was some stuttering, and I alt tabbed to see what was going on.

My 2900xt was 120 celcius

nonsense, its plenty o fun.

especially when youre trying to mess with your computer with it still turned on, and have a 200mm fans blade come flying off from your thumb.

i found the same thing with my TRUE. it happens with all heatsinks. or the larger ones. eventually the temp tops off, and finds the balance between the surface area dissapating the heat and the heat being dumped in.
