well as common sense, copper is a more denser metal than aluminum and much more denser than steel, so gold "i know gold is heavy", depending on the karats wouldn't gold be much better than copper or not?

edit: I always wondered this and thought about it 2 years back and never put thought to ask about it, it lingered in the back of my head.

Intermolecular structure will dictate thermal conduction--if the heat (vibrations) can be efficiently transferred through the bulk material to "the other side," then that substance will be a good conductor--if not, then it won't. Diamond is considered a "rigid" molecule (like any solid), but depending on the direction of heat flow through the crystals, it can conduct heat very well.

Thermal conductivity is not related to density. There might seem to be a correlation between density and thermal conductivity for some substances (like as one goes up, so does the other), but they're unrelated.

The lattice bond structure (which also gives diamonds their strength). Each carbon atom has 4 equal bonds.

Gold has worse thermal conductivity than Copper and Silver. (silver being higher than copper by about 7%).
Carbon Nanotubes are actually used in a lot of computer equipment, and have a conductivity twice that of diamond. Nanotubes were discovered in 1991 so the work and research on what they can be used for is still being done. I would expect they would be the pinnacle of cooling if they ever come to heatsinks and thermal paste (they already make carbon nanotube epoxy, so it might actually be available some place if you look around hard enough).

That is why cheap cases are made of steel.

Hey! Some people like how it looks and the rigidity! My Cosmos is offended.

Steel is not the best heatsink material. Ever notice how old cars tend to take longer to cool off than newer ones even tho they run 30º cooler? Steel is an excellent heat capacitor, as in, it stores the stuff really well. We don't want to store it, however. We want the heat to ****.
