Here's the situation, at my school's welding lab, I have an endless supply of steel. Yet, I never hear about steel in the making of heatsinks. My question is that if I were to make a heatsink out of steel, would it do any good? Weight is not a problem, neither is looks. I just wanted to hear your thoughts.

Steel is real slow at transferring heat so thats why its not used in making heat sinks.

Let's see, would it be advisable... nope, no, don't do it, not a chance, uh-uh, run away, negatory, and imagine a couple of other ways to say that steel is a horrible heat conductor. It doesn't dissipate fast enough. One of the reasons that it's used for ovens and other cookware.
