Default Alternitave to lapping

I have a friend who is.. .Well the best description would be gear head. I was talking to him about lapping a heatsink today, and he was thinking of using muffing compound. He says it can get a finish down to 10 microns (0 is a perfect mirror finish, and 10 is equivalent to about 3000 grit sandpaper).

He said it was this white block of material, but he didnt describe it too well. Would think work, or does this even exist (I think I spelled it right, I'm 99% sure he said muffing compound).

I don't like friends touching my computer parts, but hey, that's just me. But why would you let someone else do it for you, get a lap kit from performancepcs.com and lap away my friend.

Plus, the reward is MUCH more satisfying.

No, I would probably be doing it with him. I'm pretty good friends with him, and I go over to his place semi-frequently.

I was just looking for alternatives, so that I don't have to buy a lapping kit (though he does have 2000 grit sandpaper).

You sure it isn't buffing.

Quote:
Metal polishing, also termed buffing, is the process of smoothing metals and alloys and polishing to a bright, smooth mirror-like finish. Metal polishing is often used to enhance cars, motorbikes, antiques, etc. Many medical instruments are also polished to prevent contamination in marks in the metals.
Quote:
Generally buffing is a multistage process. First, abrasives -- which may be coated, non woven or woven -- are applied at high speed to remove surface defects like pits, nicks, lines and scratches from the articles to be buffed. Then mops of various materials are used to smooth the surface to be buffed. Lastly, cotton mops are used to give a mirror-like finish to the articles. As a general rule, coarse grit abrasives are used first and fine grit abrasives later. This gives a smooth finish by forming very thin lines that are not visible to the naked eye. Lubricants like wax, diesel fuel and kerosene are used as lubricating and cooling media during these operations. Sophisticated computer-controlled machines are available which do buffing of intricately shaped articles. Before the advent of such machines, buffing was done by hand.

I'm decently sure he said muffing, but I might've misheard him.

Yeah, its probably buffing.

He said he had a special material that he uses though, and it can get metal SUPER smooth. I might be able to get a picture and a better description of it tomorrow.

Buffing gets things smooth/shiny

lapping gets it flat, which is really what you're going for

If you'd really like to try it, It'd suggest lapping it flat first, and then buffing it smooth.
Another thing to think about is that he'd probably have to use a buffing wheel which would, well, be quite an experience trying to use on something as small as a processor (although they might make smaller version then what I've seen).
