For an E4500 you don't have to do that

E4500's aren't soldered down, so you could just cut the black adhesive and remove the IHS

On topic:

OP, you have a LOT of patience to do such a thing
Good job

What I don't understand is how your temps could be so high to begin with? I'm using the P5Q Deluxe mobo like you, and a Q6600, and a lapped Thermalright Ultra X. My room is also around 25c, and I don't see my temps go up that high at 1.46v core @ 3.87GHz, with Loadline Calibration on. My max load temp I've seen is 62c at the most after playing GRID for like couple of hours and running 30min of OCCT.

My Guess is that I had a very unlucky IHS.

Another question is, when you sanded down the IHS, you must have taken off about a 1-2mm from the original height. How did that affect the heatsink pressure on the CPU? Is it loose? Did you create a solution to compensate for the height differential?

I ask this because on my Thermalright, there was a mod (using a simple washer between the x brace and the heatsink so it compresses better) that dropped my temps about 2-3c, which means if you can do something similar, maybe you can see even more of a temp drop.

I simply removed the cpu clamp. I used the washers to compensate for the height difference. The pressure from the heat sink clamps also held it in place tightly so it was very solid. my first post pretty much explains everything.

Just wanted to contribute to the discussion by posting two pics of two of the four processors I made IHS-less. I used the pan method and it worked beautifully. 4/4 successes. Big up for the patience though...

I also beheaded a e8400 and another q6600.

Ps anyone interested in a IHS-less e6600 (the one I have sitting around in my room). I'll make a good price for it...
