Making the slot for the fan in the middle will be EXTREMELY hard and messy, and your 'enlarge fins' idea is rediculous. But a push-pull will work Consider a shroud, as well.

You'll also need a retention bracket that looks more like a letter "I" than a letter "X".

I have a load of aluminium sheet thats perfect actually, it would just be a case of de-soldering the originals and sliding on the new ones + resoldering them.

20 minutes work tops.
