Hey OCN,
__________________I need your assistance to mod my two ancient fans. ![]() ![]() My fans' model #: AD1212UB-A73GL and its manufacturer is ADDA and they are included in many gateway computers. The reason for this mod is because the cable of the fans are too short. They aren't long enough to reach my Sunbeam Fan controllers and create other cable management issues.... I need to be very careful because these two remaining fans are only equipment I have for my Q9450 and HD 4850 cooling. In other words, I can't allow potential failures to happen. These are my following questions to you: 1. As you can see in pic, the fan has four wires (which means four sockets): red black blue and yellow. I think red and black wires are for power and blue and yellow are speed control, right? ![]() 2. Will it work if I cut and rewire the fan cable with the extension (red and black) so I can utilize the four-pin socket? If you need me to clarify or elaborate anything please post here. Thanks guys. 1) Molex connectors don't have speed control.Yellow is 12v, Red it 5v and the two blacks are ground. Case fans generally only use the 12v and its single accompanying ground.
2)Yes you can rewire the fan to use the smaller 4 pin connector. However, you can only connect two of the wires (and that's all you need really). RPM reporting and PWM is not supported by a molex connector for obvious reasons. Connect black to black and red to yellow (if you connect red to red you'll get 5v instead of 12v resulting in much lower fan speed or even the possibility that it won't start).

Um.... Molex will only support the Black and red wires. There is not fan speed control or sensing with molex

Thx for your replies.
__________________Actually, I need to rewire them from the small 4-pin to 3-pin sockets. I'll have black with black and yellow with red. Will the current remain the same when I connect the modded fans to my fan controller? In other words, will the modded fans burn up the controller? According to the label on the fan, it is 12V with .50 A. My sunbeam rheobus controller has output amp of 1.67A.

I may be wrong, but I suspect that what you are trying to do is pointless; as the 4pin just plugs into the 3pin, just without pwm.

I just concluded my project. From my experiment I encountered the fact that my fan has umm.. unusual color coding on the wires. Even though it was 12V fan, I needed to reconfigure black and red wires not the yellow one. I cut and paste random color from Intel stock fans and now my fans have all sort of color on them

Right lets start at the beginning.....
EDIT totally confused now...what do you mean you cut and paste wires from intel fans..... Oh I get it... I have looked at your picture at the top the ADDA fan...it has only 2 wires doesn't it...you've led everyone a right merry go round... I don't have a sunbeam so I can't comment on it. If it has facilities for speed sensor and everything I don't think those parts will work as your ancient fans are not wired for this. The black is the ground wire and the red, while not conforming to modern wiring colors is the 12v line. You need to look on the back of the sunbeam and see what plug you need (probably 4 pin.) and more importantly the position of the connections. You will possibly have to spend some dosh and get a 4 wire extension with the correct 4 pin plug. Having done that my advise to you is cut off the 4 pin plug with enough wire to reattach it. then using your red and black 2 wire extension plug the fan in one end then cut off the plug on the other end. Then solder the black wire on the extension to the black wire on the 4 pin plug. Lastly solder the red wire of the extension to the yellow wire on the 4 pin plug. then insulate the cut ends of the other two wires from the 4 pin plug using tape. and your done....as far as can. The sunbeam will power the fans but that's about it your fans don't have the necessary wiring for much else. Last edited by zipdogso : 06-28-09 at 08:50 PM |
