Default Has Anyone Tried Using A Stirling Engline?

Stirling engines can be used to provide power from the difference of temperature in 2 cylinders OR vice versa. This is used in cryogenics, because energy fed into the engine can be used for cooling as low as -200C.

They are silent, vibration free and are quite efficient.

Smaller versions for electronics have just stared being used, and here's one-

Except from the relatively short lifespan, this seems quite a good idea- has it been tried? If not, is there any particular reason?

I think it was Gigabyte that attempted to use one as a chipset cooler, but I don't think they ever really got it working too well.

EDIT: It was MSI. Here is the news link

But from what I gather, that one uses the heat to form power, which powers the fan- I'm talking reverse- use a small motor to put power into the engine, which will then cool down one side and heat up the other- all you have to do is point the hot side away from the computer, and put the cold side inside it :L

i've thought about using a sterling engine before... in several applications.

"But from what I gather, that one uses the heat to form power, which powers the fan- I'm talking reverse- use a small motor to put power into the engine, which will then cool down one side and heat up the other- all you have to do is point the hot side away from the computer, and put the cold side inside it :L "

you should read up on how a sterling motor really works... sounds like you want a peltier more than a sterling engine

Yes, that is kinda what I was thinking of- sorry, a problem on my behalf- too unclear.

And the engine part I was talking about was this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stirlin...e#Applications- Maybe I'm no using the right sources (google is my friend, but wikipedia is my friend who tells me the wrong thing so I look daft )
