Overclocking your networking equipment might reduce your ping times, but I doubt you're gonna notice a 0.35ms improvement or something like that.

I wonder if a hardware mod such as replacing a resistor or resistors with lower ohm ones would force the modem/router's microcontroller to work faster.

that's possible but with a "DSL" modem the speed is limited from the ISP. overclocking it is near imposable if not at all. the modulation of the signal from digital(ethernet side) to analog(the phone side) can only go as fast as the isp allows it. "cable" modems can be hacked from what i hear. that's why time worner cable doesn't allow the "surfboard" cable modem to be used with there service for that resion.
