So, I had a Kingston HyperX RAM cooler I wasn't using because of my Xiggy covering two memory slots. I decided to put it on my 8800 GT. The two small 60mm fans just slide out of the RAM cooler. I basically just cut a rectangular hole in it with my Dremel blade/polisher/sander/bread slicer etc. Here's my results with pics!
Picture of it right after I stuck it on. ![]() Picture of the side. ![]() Close up shot of the cooler. ![]() Shot of the cooler in action. ![]() Another similar shot. ![]() Temps before: 55-60 idle and 85-90 load. Temps after: 50-52 idle and 80-ish load. Didn't really drops temps that much, but that's the heatsink. It's not really made for the air to be pushed down on it, but rather through it. In case you're wondering, I did keep the blower fan that came with it and I used double-side adhesive pads to keep it on the heatsink. I keep it below 40%, so there's no noise. And...I love Dremel! Sorry I didn't take more pics.

Thanks, the idea only came to be because of how momentously bored I was. I think I might mod my 9600 GT stock cooler I have lying around. I already lapped it's copper base.
At least it's shroud is plastic.

Well, that's not a bad idea. But, think of the thermalright T-rad 2 and how it's fins are. Well, the stock cooler's is quite the opposite. It's really designed to have air pushed through it. Really sucks. I noticed that the stock cooler actually has 3 heatpipes, so it's ruined by the bad aluminum heatsink. Some of the fins are horizontal, instead of being vertical. I guess it's to control air flow.
Here's a pic of the T-rad 2.

![]() You could lap the heatsink base too.

Hmm, I guess I could try it later today. Though, I did use double-sided adhesive that said "permanent" on the box. Wonder if I can get it off.
![]() Can't hurt trying, I suppose. EDIT: Okay, I reversed the fans and checked the temps. Unfortunately I didn't observe any differences in temperature. I also turned the fans off to see the difference from just the blower fan. It did make a difference, but it mostly slowed down the heat buildup, not actually lowering overall temps. More pics so you can see what I'm talking about in regards to the heatsink. ![]()

Little bit of an update. I've basically destroyed the stock 8800gt cooler. It blows at cooling. So, I needed something to cool it. I chose my good ol' PNY 9600 GT stock cooler. As you'll see in the pictures, they didn't design this cooler very well. It blows the hot air into the case. Luckly, I'm no longer using a case. I also bought a Sempron 140 about a week ago and unlocked it to a Athlon II X2 440. The stock cooler sucked, so I bought a Sunbeam Core-contact freezer. Yeah, it's overkill.
But, here's the interesting part. The stock Sempron 140 cooler is basically a large aluminum block with a fan. So, I took the big block, measured a square outline on my 9600 GT cooler and used my Dremel to cut the hole. Then, I used super-glue to keep the block from falling off. Worked like a charm. For the record, before this mod, the card was idling at about 60 degrees celsius. Loaded at about 90+ (with furmark). 30% fan speed. Here's some pics. ![]() ![]() The only other thing I added was a 120mm case fan that I was not using to blow air on the aluminum heatsink/block. So, now it idles at about 45-50 degrees celsius and loads to 83 (furmark). Of course, this load is very rare. No game should produce that result. So, I fired up the 64-bit crysis demo and checked the temp after about 10+ mins of playing. Turned out to be 63 degrees celsius. Very nice, indeed. And keep in mind that the 9600 GT stock cooler only has one copper heatpipe versus 3 for the 8800 GT stock cooler. Not bad for essentially being free (for me, at least).
