Marketplace reminders - protect yourself when dealing with other members!
Recently we have had far, far more sales/trades go bad than we like to see. Unfortunately, many of these issues would have been entirely preventable with a more cautious approach to conducting deals online. The Overclock.net Marketplace is, overwhelmingly, a very safe place to trade, however, a few common sense rules should always apply.
To highlight some items from the great resources available in the Marketplace Rules subforum: -Never is it acceptable for a seller to request payment through PayPal as a gift. This is against PayPal rules, our rules, and leaves the buyer zero recourse to try and reclaim their money if the deal goes south. This is a fundamental step to protecting your purchase. -Money Orders do not offer any protection, and are a poor way to trade online. Money orders are also easily and frequently forged. Be wary of deals where they are the "only" option for payment. The same is true for Western Union or any of the other instant cash transfer services. -If in doubt, ask for pictures. Often we see high-dollar items listed for sale without pictures, of, if there are pictures they do not contain the member's username. Sellers: It is simple and highly suggested that you include a picture of the item with your username and 'OCN' written on a piece of paper. This confirms that you indeed own the item you have listed for sale. Buyers: Be smart, and request a picture like this if one is not available! -Overclock.net staff cannot and will not get involved in marketplace transactions. Remember, when you take proper means to protect yourself, services like PayPal, your credit card companies, etc all have dedicated teams set up to investigate fraud. We do not have access to any info other than member-vs-member word of mouth, which makes us ineffective as anything other than a mediator. -If a buyer or seller can offer reasonable proof that you are conducting fraudulent activity, you will be permanently banned from the forums, and we will make all efforts to point the affected members to every legal resource available to them in pursuing their money or goods. You have been warned - scam elsewhere. Please take the time to read through the Marketplace Rules forum again. There are tens of pages of good information there, all of which can help to ensure you never find yourself on the receiving end of a bad deal. Be smart - buyer, and seller, beware. The internet is a fantastic way to buy and sell goods if you put in a little extra legwork to protect yourself.
