Smile A look at some Fan Isolator Kits.

Here's some shots of the fan isolator kits... There are three different styles of grommet: Ribbed--which is large enough to accept a #10 screw...and requires drilling out the existng screw holes to 5/16" on the case to fit the grommet. And Smooth--which are lower profile to the case and also require re-drilling the hole. And small red silicon grommets...which will actually fit in most existing screw holes for fans (3/16").

There are several different kits... torx-headed or phillips machine screws for either 25mm or 38mm deep fans...with either self-locking nuts or acorn nuts and on the "deluxe" kit thubscrews and hardware for any size fan and a mesh filter.

The shots are pretty self explanatory.

Ribbed grommet phillips machine screw.

Torx, smooth grommet.

Phillips smooth grommet.

Self-locking nuts (Nylock)

Torx drive button head machine screws with smooth grommet, steel washers and Nylock nut for 38mm deep fan.

Phillips drive machine screws with smooth grommet, steel washers and Nylock nuts for 25mm deep fan.

Installation is child's play...Research and Develpoment demonstrating a 15 month old girl could put these together...

Torx drive button head machine screws with smooth gormmets, steel washers and Nylock nuts for 25mm fan.

Here's the "deluxe" isolator kit. Comes with hardware for 38mm and 25mm, thumbscrews, mesh filter, washers. The extra long screws are temporary.

These are a little different..this small silicon grommet will fit in most existing fan screw holes on cases that surface mount fans with screws without redrilling the hole. These use smaller diameter 6-32 machine screws for either
25mm or 38mm fans and are secured with acorn nuts which ensure the grommet is not overtightened.

These can be used to make up a "deluxe" kit as well.

The basic components.

The Kits.

When you mount a fan directly to a case it transmits the noise straight from the frame to the chassis.

When you use an isolator grommet the vibration is absorbed by the grommet and the frame noise is decoupled from the chassis.

There are many ways to do this...but this is classic "Silent PC" modding.

On those I need to get some slightly shorter bolts for the 38mm application...but I snip them off and dress the threads...just more work.

Oooh, very nice Looks like it will do a superb job of isolating the vibrations.

I just have one criticism though. Don't you think the extra gap between the fan and the filter will nullify the point of having a filter since the air will just go around?

I have used this same seet up for a long while one several builds. I would say at least 90% of the filth is trapped on the filter...despite the filter being a total mat of fiflth the rad and case interior are nearly spotless...I have this set up on Crunch, Both Waterclockers, the tech station and for a short shile on A couple of different 900 mods... I thought it would beless effective--but TBH the gap makes less noise...with the filter too close to the fan it makes a louder noise when running. And no one ever saide the filter has to go against the grommet...it could just as well mount on the rear of the fan frame--which I have done on a couple of occasions--the fan gets dirty--but the case stays clean

Wow, interesting observation. Those must be some really low-restriction filters

I have tried the aluminum mesh and the foam ones. The foam ones work well but seem to be the most restrictive.
