Scarring Your Psyche

Hey Guys.
Just wanted to let you all know that if you have an idea or need some Special Service I am always willing to try something new. Here's a shroud for a BountyHead's 320 radiator I fabricated tonight. ![]() I started by printing out a fullsize image from the PDF on the Rad...this way even though I do not have the rad on hand I can be sure it will fit. ![]() ![]() It took a little tweaking to get the print to be exact. ![]() I used the print to mark all the parts...no measuring required. ![]() I set up a fixture so I could make the parts quickly to exact dimensions. ![]() My trusty companion... ![]() I marked the angle for a trim. ![]() I find it is much more accurate to mark and set the tools to marks than to try and use a ruler... ![]() ![]() Safety First! ![]() Making the angled cuts on the chop box ![]() Finishing the cuts with the bandsaw ![]() How do they make shrouds so CHEAP...this is a lot of work! ![]() Transfering the marks ![]() These holes need to be exactly in the right place ![]() I set up the drill press with a jig and a template so I could precisely locate the 24 holes ![]() I pressed in clinch nuts to receive the 8-32 screws that will secure the fans to the shroud. 1/16" alumunum is too thin to expect a tapped hole to hold up to repeated use. A little expensive, these particular clinch nuts have an antivibration Oring in them that locks the screw. ![]() And they look good too ![]() ![]() ![]() Bountyhead is using 38mm deep fans so I rustled up some 1-3/4" screws for that application. ![]() The corners: these will attach to 1/8" gloss black acrylic panels to complete the shroud ![]() Sanded and polished and waxed and buffed.... ![]() A nice piece of work: sturdy and light. ![]() I used a piece of 1/16" flat bar to join the two angles I worked previously. ![]() One side has the clinch nits for the fans and the other has holse for the m4-6 screws I included to attach the shroud to the rad ![]() The end panels are acrylic...I like the contrast. And there you have it. As usual I spent way more time and materials than I estimated...but the end result is exactly what I was after.

That's good to hear. I doubt I will be making many more shrouds like this...it took me about 4 hours...
So you have a one-of-a-kind shroud now ![]() I'll ship it out Monday AM.

I've never seen anyone use a faceshield like that before -- just safety goggles.
That's a good idea though, It looks a LOT more comfortable then goggles do (damn do those things make you sweat) You must have a LOT of patience, it takes a lot of concentration to be able to build something where everything hast to be precise.

I am fascinated by metal work. I guess watching all these incredible Mill-oriented projects has got me champing at the bit.
I was planning to braze the parts together...but since I still would need to perfect that technique I was loathe to screw up those parts learning...so I cheated this time. Stuff like shrouds is really easier if you use sheets of metal and fold them and so on...but I still need a few more tools to do that. Eventually I hope to become expert at aluminum brazing but I will need to do a lot of practicing on scrap.
