Scarring Your Psyche
![]() |
I started on the Radbase today.
Here's some shots of the progress. ![]() Using a guide I cur a pair of 120mm holes in the bottom of an older A900 chassis (Velocitor )![]() Using pilot holes I made with the drillpress I made the holes that will sandwich the chassis between the PA120.2 and the fans. ![]() THe holes have to line up precisely. I am using this "scrap" chassis to iron out any fitment issues. ![]() That's the basic idea...The rad/holes/fans/ will actually be repositioned about an 1" further forward to accomodate the FSP FX 700. ![]() Made a mess of 1" strips from medium blue opaque acrylic for the finned radbase. ![]() They are close but not close enough. I taped them toether and ran them through the saw as a packet. ![]() Closer but still nothing to look at... ![]() Closer...but there is much more to go to make them finished. ![]() I tried to kep them all the same...hence working them as a pack... ![]() They are exactly the length of the case. ![]() I made a number of strips exactly the width of the case of UV blue and 1/4" clear to make the spaces for the louver system. ![]() These width strips will be fused together, sanded flush, polished and then stacked and fused to the sanded and polished long strips. Additonal 1" x1" squares of UV blue and clear will be added in the sent to kep the louvers from bowing over time. ![]() This piece will be fused to the stacked strips to add dimensional stability and give me something with which to attach the chassis to the radbase. It will be cut out to let the rad mount to the chassis. A piece of sound dampening (1/8") will be attached to the chassis bottom before the rad or base get screwed on. ![]() Here's a PA120.3 which is the same width as the 120.2 that I have coming. ![]() This gives an idea as to how much space is under the rad for airflow. ![]() This 1/4" piece of clear will be fused to the stack to add rigidity and seal up the bottom of the chamber. ![]() Here's the stack on top of the base piece. ![]() Here's the piece that still needs a cutout for the PA 120.2 ![]() That's how it will go...of course there will not be any brown paper: just blue acrylic strips... ![]() Once everything has been dressed and assembled I may end up painting it if the acrylic does not compliment the paint...we'll see. ![]() I took a new side panel and cut it out to receive a piece of translucent blue acrylic. ![]() I cut a piece of medium blue and made it slightly oversized. I will glue it into position at the end. I want to try out my blast cabinet and do some custom etching on the piece. ![]() And that's all for today. I can get the pieces dressed and ready to assemble and put the base together before the rad arrives...but I want to make sure I have the dimensions just right before cutting into the painted chassis. More soon

I am so confuzled
![]() So you are trying to mount a 2 slot RAD under the AT900? Why not attach it to the top or to the back of the case? Interesting idea though.

The fans will mount to the topside of the bottom of the chassis...
The rad will mount to the underside of the bottom of the chassis. The space below the rad will allow for air to be drawn through the louvers in the perimeter of the base. The 2 120mm fans will pull air up and the large top panel fan will draw it all the way out. By having the fans inside the case the noise will be less than having them exposed. I would think the aesthetic reasons for enclosing the rad are obvious ![]() I mean anyone could just duct-tape a rad to the outside of a case...

Once I get the base done I will have the jigs, templates, fixtures to replicate such a base for any A900 to make for a quick LC conversion. It's a lot of work to make just one....and no doubt some rework and refinement will be necessary.
Tomorrow I am going to move on to the other side panel and start chopping away on a design I came up with. I want to rough out all the major items and then go back through again and dial each one in using the beater chassis. Then once I have it so it looks right I'll chop into the painted chassis.

Sweet, this is exactly what I was hoping would happen.. CD just goes to town & lets his creativity take over!
Btw, do you happen to know the height of the entire unit with the base? Just curious for placement purposes.

I'm tied to the house ATM. Wife is at school. I'll give you overall dimensions tomorrow.
I'm going to make some videos tomorrow. I want to capture the flying sparks.
