Hey guys I am going to make the uber econo version of the station this time.
I ordered some Extruded PVC angles (Gray, 1-1/2" by .240" thick) and some Expanded PVC sheet goods (Black .240" thick) to further cut the costs of the build by being more innovative with the materials. Unlike the previous stations I will be eliminating the use of aluminum and hardware as much as possible. This station will be glued together, fused actually, and somewhat lighter than the previous versions. I've used expanded PVC in the Yacht biz for overheads and other trim panels: it takes paint great and is light and relatively stiff. Unlike acrylic it does not tap or bolt together well because it can be crushed or deformed. But it glues up perfectly. It also machines a helluva lot easier than metal or acrylic...so it will be faster and easier to work with. Since paint will be an option this is a chance for a DIYer to customize a nicely constructed and durable station with a paint job and save a ton of money... I'll be making it in the dual 240(14" cube) and dual 240/single 320 (14" x 18") sizes with a variety of no cost options for front and side panels. I am also likely to bring out a 20" wide unit to accomodate the PA120.3. I already have router templates for the MCR320, MCR230 and GTX 240 and PA120.3 and 120.2 and PA160 so putting any of those holes in the station will be free. The wider stations will cost a touch more. I anticipate the cost of this station will be at or around $150...but I will try to make it even lower if possible.

Well the 1/4" expanded PVC is going to be a bit more flexible than the 1/4" acrylic: but it will also be more resilient and lighter and therefore cheaper and "safer" to ship. I'll be looking at ways to improve the unit as well.
And a big plus is that the person buyiong the station gets a complete, assembled, ready-to-use product instead of a pile of screws, angles and panels to put together.

I've been wanting to try my hand at flames...I've got a couple of spray guns and a nice compressor...and NAPA sells custom tinted auto paint...I used to shoot lacquer professionally and it's about the same as painting...just a matter of getting familiar with the materials again.

![]() It's as easy for me to make 6 sets of parts at once as one. And the more I make the same thing the better I do it and the faster I do it so Win Win. The problem I have with working acrylic is that to get SQW (Syrillian Quality Work) with one-off builds you need to spend hours and hours polishing edges...places like DangerDen can laser cut their prototypes in house and there is no polishing. I am looking into getting a Laser Cutter...but I need to gauge the market. They are not cheap...it would take 700-1000 techstation sales to cover the cost of one after materials and time. And then you only get sharp straight edges...no routed profiles...no gleaming bevel...no SQW
