Default Feedback thread: Wood Techstations

Hey guys I am looking for some general feedback.

In case ya don't know I am a woodworker by trade...started in 1983. I design and build furniture and cabinetry for yachts (or I did until I moved to VA in 2005).

So woodwork is really what I enjoy.

Now that you have that info what I need to know is how many people here that are into tech stations would be interested in a furniture grade techstation constructed from exotic hardwoods?

I'm planning on making some boxes and since a station is really just a partial box I thought I would check in.

Exotic Hardwood is very expensive...so before I bother making anything to sell here PC related I wanted to test the waters.

Thanks in advance.

If it was nice finished wood that wasn't just rectangular panels that'd be pretty awesome.

Oh now we're talkin!
I'm not a big fan of tech's and I consider them as an ugly furniture from startrek or something but a case maybe. Since youre wandered in shipbuilding and so forth I would suggest a case in teakwood with some nice layers of laquer/oil with rounded corners and maybe even sikaflex-lines/fills to get a good perspective and a nautical look to it.
Yummy!

I do hope you will make a prototype of your idea.

I have always liked the idea of a wooden tech station. I think you should build one with more inexpensive materials and put a nice dark stain on it, before going ballz-out on some hardwood. But I think wood would be a great idea.

lol @ wood would

I appreciate the feedback guys. After I scarf down a cheese sammich I am going to run some purpleheart through the plane and start resawing it.

I am interested in making an all wood case...but that takes a bit of thought...and I'm running on instinct now .

Nothing quite like building a box to help me remember some stuff...

I also agree using inexpensive materials would bne a good way to get the actual piece together. The problem I have wqith inexpensive materials is that I invest a lot of time in a build...same amount of time whether I use crap or gold...so the end result is more important to me than trying to meet someone's budget.

Since I am doing this for myself at this point I have to enjoy it...or I wouldn't bother...so using pretty woods is a key factor in getting me down to the shop at all

Any wood with a nice stain looks great next to computer components. I like the comfort, like plastic, of not worrying about shorts. Maybe people can send you their old computer desks and you can build them a tech station. "Keep of piece of your favorite desk."
