I owned a Porter Cable plate joiner for maybe three years and never actually used it and traded it along with my unused Porter Cable Framing Air Nailer with cash for a Delta Bandsaw. I only tried the Portercable a few times on scrap. From what I recall it was a much higher build quality than my Freud. The sound of the gears gnashing away in the Freud tells me right off it is no where near as precise a drive mechanism. The casting and overall precision of the Freud Fence is lower than the Porter Cable. The adjustment mechanism is also somewhat inferior to the PC. My Porter Cable shipped with interchangeable Pins or Pads depending on what you liked. I prefer pins as they provide a more secure registration into the surface. The Freud does the job though...I mean for the money it's a good tool. PC lists at $279 the Freud at $100.
Some pics of my progress last night. As usual I have endless distractions but I am lucky that I have a relaxed Estimated Time of Completion on this project. ![]() This is the back edge of the side panel. The back panel is removable so I felt the need to band the edge with hardwood. I will glue in cleats on the inside face to support the removable back panel. ![]() I need more clamps ![]() Seriously ![]() The front trim piece fits so tightly that I was able to glue it on without the use of clamps. ![]() It's a subtle profile that will be more striking once it it's finished to a high gloss. Just to add some visual mass to the front ![]() Second panel about to get the same treatment. I dry fit then mask with low tack tape then glue and wipe clean with a damp rag. ![]() More soon.

The B side of the Ply I got had too many imperfections so now I have and A side and an A+ side
![]() Gotta love veneer...unless of course it's oak and it's been raining for 3 days nonstop. Caliga wanted the Red Oak stain and here's how the first swipe came out. ![]() Veneer: Flat Cut Red Oak, just like the ply...only a lot more attractive. ![]() The rest of the process shall remain an eternal mystery... ![]() Flash shots don't exactly capture the tone ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I just kept changing distance and angle to try and get a decent shot ![]() I love how this stuff smells. And now without flash, which isn't the real color either because of the flourescent lighting... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If you like strong grain that really sucks up stain choose oak... The stain will protect the veneer from sucking up any more atmospheric moisture and a second shot of red oak stain after about 24 hours of dry time will add just a bit more color. More soon

I am working on the shelves now. It's all very tedious and time consuming. I use a cabinet scraper and bring the moldings flush to the ply then sand to 320 then stain. 3 down and 5 to go...

Took me till about 1:30 AM but I got the shelves stained. Sometime tonight I will swipe them one more time.
Wish I had a bigger shop. Called on the glass doors and they should be shipping out next week. It's going to be like putting a puzzle together...but I have it all worked out. Just need to get some sealer on the stain before I start making dust.

That oak grain is purrdy. Reminds me of the front doors that big mansions have. Solid. This is going to be a great classy product.
Oh, I know exactly how you feel right now caliga4221.
