Program Category: Stress Testing

Prime95 is a very useful stability tester for overclockers. When you run a "Torture Test" it will indicate whether or not your PC is stable. If you can run this application for at least 24 hours without errors than you can assume that you have a stable overclock.

when i run prime95, is it safe for my temps to be about 60, for a C2D, overclocked at 3.8, and leave it on overnight to test stablity?

You should have no trouble keeping it at 60°C overnight. It's not necessarily the best idea to run a C2D that hot 24/7 for an extended period of time (pre-G0s, that is) as 55°C max. is recommended for long term overclocking. Still, for the period of time that you're talking about, there should be no adverse effects to your gear.

Stability testing is a very subjective thing. Generally, even the most die hard of testers will accept a 24 hour test as proof of stability. Others say 6 or 10 hours. Personally, I don't go nearly that long, instead doing a shorter test and consider things fine unless I notice instability when running other applications.

Would you happen to know the safe limits of an X2 opteron 175...

...would a 24/7 OC with load temps @ 49-51ish threaten the chips longevity seriously?

I think the juncture point is 65*C ???

I'm much better informed on Intel than AMD, and I honestly don't know the recommended load temps for dual core Optys off hand. I suggest you check out the AMD CPU forum for more info.
