You should only apply a thin layer to the CPU. Try to tighten it as much as you can without bending your motherboard

Found out by doing some research the CPU cooler I have is JUNK.

http://www.frostytech.com/articlevie...id=2094&page=4

I'm going to pickup a Zalman 8700NT.

Quick question though for stock CPU"s. I have a buddy that has a stock AMD 6400+. Should he use the stock compound that is supplied on the heatsink or should he remove it and use a thermal grease such as Zalman STG1 since that CPU is so hot.

I recommend using AS5 as thermal paste. The reason the CPU gets hot is either because of the stock CPU Cooler or because you applied too much thermal paste Applying too much thermal paste results in it absorbing the heat instead of transfering the heat to the CPU Cooler.

OK so I have changed to the Zalman 8700XT CPU fan.

Should I set it to run PMW for smart cooling, or just disable this?

I now can at least run the system for more then 3mins under load...

35degrees @ IDLE
70degress @ Full Load after 10mins

When I run this, it's only using 1 core...

My task manager is also showing only 50% CPU usage.

Yeah for Orthos you'll need to run two instances of it in order to get 100% CPU usage

Just so you guys know, if you push your C2D CPU above 60 degrees your reducing it's logevity, those of you that have it above 70 degrees playing games, man don't be surprised if the thing is fried in six months. Also, I'd be disappointed if you're putting a better heatsink on and you're hitting 70+ degrees after only 10 minutes of stress prime.

My heatsink is stock and my 6850 is OC'ed to 3.3Ghz and can run for 8 minutes 40 seconds before it hits 60 degrees and has not hit 60+ degrees playing games yet. That's safe if you ask me. If it's going over 60 I'm dropping the OC it's just not worth it, don't fry your hardware for a hard on.

Last I checked, ~70C was the limit on most C2Ds, yes? Where are you getting this 60C line from?

Default I ran orthos for only 10 secs and it jumped from 45 (celius) idle to...

I ran orthos for only 10 secs, and when i checked my temps for my cpu, (e6550 dual core, 2.33ghz per core) both cores jumped from 45 and 46 to 67 and 68 degrees.

This is with a stock cooler. Is my cpu suppose to run that hot at idle.

Also my friend has a E4300 1.8ghz and runs at 18 degrees at idle, and the fan barely spins. But when he plays a game, it only jumps up to 30 if that even

Should i buy a better cooler, or is the stock one alright for just playing Bf2 and Cod4?
